Fela Gets an Off-Broadway Play
Fela Off Broadway
For those unbeknownst, Fela Kuti is a legendary Nigerian performer and the founder of Afrobeat. He is admired amongst my relatives and amongst many Nigerians because of his talent, political commentary on albums, and his outspokenness on Nigeria's politrix.
Some of you may already be familiar with his son Femi. He collaborated with Common on "Time Travellin" for Like Water for Chocolate.

My brothers middle name is Fela so my parents schooled me on him, I guess. I'm always surprised when people arent familiar with him!
Hey Thembi,
I'm actually surprised that ppl (80's babies) know him, LOL! My friend's fiance was playing Fela in his car and he was smiling cuz he knew I'd recognize the music. I was like "Whatchu know about Fela?" and we started cracking up.
The Sundance Channel had a good documentary on Fela that was done in the early 80s. My only complaint about it is that it was too short.
i used to go to his shrine on friday nights whenever i was in Lagos when i lived in Nigera - wouldnt hit stage until after 2am
